Fresh blackberries give this lemonade its vibrant color and fruity character, while fresh lemon juice adds a bright tartness that keeps the drink balanced.
A homemade blackberry syrup brings the ingredients together, and sparkling water provides a light, refreshing finish.
Ingredients
For the Blackberry Syrup
- 1 cup fresh blackberries
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
For the Lemonade
- 2 ounces fresh lemon juice
- 2 ounces blackberry syrup
- 4 ounces sparkling water
- Ice cubes
- Fresh blackberries and lemon slices, for garnish
Prepare the Blackberry Syrup
Add the blackberries, sugar, and water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Lightly press the blackberries with a spoon as they cook to help release their juices. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl or jar.
Press the berries gently to extract the remaining liquid, then discard the solids. Allow the syrup to cool completely before assembling the lemonade.
Assemble the Lemonade
Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the fresh lemon juice and blackberry syrup, then stir until evenly combined.
Slowly pour in the sparkling water and stir gently once to combine while preserving the carbonation.
Garnish with fresh blackberries and a lemon slice. Serve immediately while the drink is cold and sparkling.
Adjust the Flavor
The sweetness and tartness can be adjusted according to personal preference.
For a sweeter drink, add a little more blackberry syrup. For a more pronounced citrus flavor, increase the lemon juice slightly. If the mixture tastes too concentrated, add a little more sparkling water.
Make adjustments gradually to maintain a balanced blackberry and lemon flavor.
Make It Ahead
The blackberry syrup can be prepared in advance and cooled before storing it in a clean, covered container in the refrigerator.
When ready to serve, combine the chilled syrup with fresh lemon juice and ice, then add the sparkling water just before serving. This keeps the preparation convenient while maintaining the drink's refreshing texture.
Serve for Gatherings
For a larger batch, combine the blackberry syrup and lemon juice in a pitcher and refrigerate until needed. Add the sparkling water shortly before serving and stir gently.
Keep the ice in individual glasses instead of adding it directly to the pitcher. This helps prevent the lemonade from becoming diluted as it sits.
Garnish each glass with fresh blackberries and lemon slices for a simple, colorful presentation.
Flavor Variation
For a fresh herbal variation, add a few mint leaves to each glass before serving. The mint complements the blackberry and lemon flavors while keeping the original recipe simple.
Blackberry Lemonade combines homemade blackberry syrup, fresh lemon juice, and sparkling water in a simple yet polished beverage. With a make-ahead syrup and easy assembly, it is suitable for everyday refreshment or serving at gatherings.
